Book Review: Your Money, Your Marriage

A review of Your Money, Your Marriage: The Secrets to Smart Finance, Spicy Romance, and Their Intimate Connection, by Cherie & Brian Lowe. (Find out how to win a free copy below!)

A much needed resource about money, intimacy, and marriage.

Cherie and Brian Lowe get it right in the intro of their new book, Your Money, Your Marriage: "There is always hope." While it might not always feel like it in marriage, especially when it comes to the topics of money and intimacy, the Lowes provide the right word of encouragement for couples in their book Your Money, Your Marriage. I enjoyed their first book, Slaying the Debt Dragon, and they nailed it again in their new release. You can find my review of the book here.

They write in a practical, engaging way, and are easy to relate to as they share wisdom about money, intimacy, and marriage. They have a very high view of marriage, and call their readers to something great. We need more of that in Christian marriage books!

In our marriage, Kristen is the saver and I'm the spender. We both struggle with comparison at times, and finances are a frequent topic of conversation with each other and with our kids. Sometimes we're too cavalier with our money and other times it becomes an idol. We, like most couples I know, need all the help we can get.

Every chapter has Discussion Questions and "Financial Foreplay" suggestions. The book is thoroughly practical with suggestions from the authors. Brian and Cherie share their recommendations on not just what to do but how to do it. The book website includes a short, fun Your Money, Your Marriage quiz that I’d suggest you take as well. They’re not afraid to challenge the reader in areas such as comparison and FOMO. And, they consistently drive the reader to God’s Word and God’s people.

Money problems will mess up your marriage. Most couples struggle at a minimum in small ways with their finances. If finances remain unchecked and undiscussed, at best couples will stay married with a mountain of debt or financial woes. At worst they’ll divorce with a mountain of debt and future expenses. Regardless, most couples will experience conflict around their finances.

This book will help you grow your relationship so that you’re not letting money ruin your marriage and your intimacy.

Who should read Your Money, Your Marriage?

There are plenty of books about marriage and plenty of books on money, but not many books on marriage AND money.

I work with couples all over the relationship spectrum, and I will not hesitate to recommend this book to premarrieds, newlyweds, empty nesters, and every stage of life in between! I like to read marriage books, and Your Money, Your Marriage is a much needed book on money and intimacy.
