Stuff I Like Saturdays: Date Night Edition

As I've shared in prior posts, most couples do a great job of pursuing each other on the premarried side. They’re creative, spontaneous and intentional in the ways they date each other. Once married, however, most couples fall into ruts and routines and quit being intentional in the ways they pursue and date their spouse.

In this week’s edition of Stuff I Like Saturdays, I share some posts I’ve read from other writers on how and why to date your spouse. Date night doesn't end when you say, "I do!" I’ll also include a few books I like on the topic and will include a list of my prior posts.

You’ll definitely want to check out my Date Night Guide - 124 Killer Date Night Ideas! You’ll need to subscribe to my blog to get the guide, but I promise you it’s worth it (plus you can always unsubscribe once you download the guide).

Stuff I Like: Date Night Edition

  • Desiring God: In Defense of Date Night, Stacy Reaoch - Couples should view date nights as a life-giving time to keep marriage your fresh. We must battle against workaholism and child-centeredness. The author responds to common objections people have about date nights (i.e., too expensive, takes away spontaneity).

  • You Don’t Need a Date night, by Tim Challies - The writer responds to claims that say date nights are the key to a healthy marriage. Couples often ask, how else can your marriage thrive without date nights and annual times away? He redefines date nights, which I completely agree with. Dates can be doing laundry, going for walks or the gym, or shopping at Home Depot. While I don't agree with everything he says, I do agree with his conclusion: marriage is much more the million little mundane moments at home

  • From All Pro Dad: Things To Do On A Date At Home - Make this the exception, not the norm, but the writer includes some great suggestions when you have a small budget or young kids.

Some Books/Resources I recommend:

  • Date Your Wife, by Justin Buzzard

  • Fun Loving You: Enjoying Your Marriage in the Midst of the Grind, by Ted Cunningham

  • 52 Uncommon Dates: A Couple's Adventure Guide for Praying, Playing, and Staying Together, by Randy E. Southern

  • A Lasting Promise, by Scott Stanley. A good date night starts with good communication!
